Say What?

Overheard while Aaron was feeding Adrian:

I'm your monkey mama, now eat your banana!

The Amazing Human Animal

We tried Cheerios with Adrian last week.
At first they were just fun little bits to push around the tray and deposit on the floor. But then! A Cheerio found it's way into his mouth. He rolled it around until it was smooshy enough to swallow.
Ah, he seemed to say, these are for eating.
Day two of Cheerio madness consisted of picking up cereal bits and having them slide out of his mouth as he tried to suck on them.
Day three of Cheerio madness was the day that made me marvel at the human animal. Witness:
Adrian sitting at highchair with Cheerio on tongue, gives me a perplexed look.
I mime chewing.
Adrian mimics me. The Cheerio is squashed between his toothless gums and swallowed.
The light goes on behind his eyes.
Every Cheerio since that one has been gummed to it's demise.

People are so cool.

Good days

(photo) Baby and me. Posted by Hello

Some days are filled with crying, fussing, and all-out nap boycotts. But there are other days, days that make you all warm and fuzzy on the inside. Yesterday was one of those.
Adrian woke in a good mood and maintained it until 1/2 an hour before bed time. He was laughing and smiling and holding up his end of the conversation (so long as what we were talking about had anything to do with atl-latl...Apparently he speaks Mayan). He tried out some Cheerios, and was totally compliant with getting in and out of the car as we ran errands yesterday.
Sigh.
Who knew that you could love someone so small and sticky so very much?

The real reason to have kids...

Is so that you never lack entertainment. Here's Adrian modeling all of the headwear variations we could think up using only a burp rag.
We're so crafty.

Project Sleep Deprivation

Oy.
O-kay. I'm back. Life (I think) has returned to normal.

Witness the last few days:

Saturday, April 9:
Adrian, oh screamy-screamy of the loudness and much nap skippage, why do you torture us so? Is it the change in your sleeping situation? Is it that you are teething? Do you have gas? Here...have some gas drops and tylenol. Feel better? No?

Sunday, April 10:
How can you wake up every 2 hours to eat? How are you not full? Where is my baby, and where did this bottomless pit with a mouth come from? How can you call 15 minutes a nap?

Monday, April 11:
Seriously, kid. How are you not full? You've had two extra bowls of cereal in addition to your regular bowl and 2 1/2 ounces of peas. Why aren't you sleeping? How can you eat and eat and grow and not sleep? Where's the sense in that?

Tuesday, April 12:
Not. one. nap.
But he did go to bed at 8:30 (and up at 11:30 and back to bed at midnight) and sleep until 6:15 am...

Wednesday, April 13:
Regular morning nap, regular afternoon nap...
plus a bowl of oatmeal, some applesauce, and peas.
Now it's time for bed.

Cross your collective fingers for us.

Medium baby.

Just got back from shopping for onesies for Adrian. We have lots of clothes for tiny baby (0-6 months) and big baby(12-18 months), but we seem to be short on stuff in the middle. I'm not sure how that happened--maybe we just expected him to have a freakish growth spurt overnight; the kind where he'd gain 10 pounds and grow 5 inches.
In other news, Aaron heard back from company A and he'll be doing a face-to-face interview later this month--hooray hooray! We were starting to get a little worried, what with it being April and our lease expiring next month and all. Not that we can go anywhere until after April 29, when Adrian will have his 6 month check-up.
I'm having a hard time believing that he's nearly six months old. Of course I'm having an equally hard time keeping track of the days of the week--now that Aaron's on leave I can't use his schedule to figure out if it's Tuesday (staff call) or Friday (long lunch).
Back to baby--Adrian has successfully eaten rice cereal, oatmeal, squash (or as we call it: sqoosh), and peas. He has unsuccessfully eaten carrots. They showed up (horror) in his diaper in the same color & consistency they went into his mouth. It was gross and kind of cool at the same time.
Aaaaah, the miracle of the human digestive system.
And now I'm off to cook dinner.

Things that make me happy, Vol 1

STEGOSAURUS MUG! Posted by Hello

Any one who has known me since 1999 will recognize this mug. I found it at a thrift shop for $3, and I am not ashamed to tell you that I have been using secondhand crockery. This mug makes me happy. It's partly the color combination, but mostly it's the dinosaurs. When I was little, I was buck-nutty for dinosaurs. My favorite place to go was the Museum of Natural History (in Washington, DC) to look at the dinosaur bones. This mug recalls all of that childhood wonder and enjoyment with the grown-up benefit of holding coffee.
I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm really an 8-year-old in a grown woman's body.

Random

I was watching a TV show the other day, and they were talking about euthanasia. But every time the said it, my brain translated it to: youth-in-Asia.
It made for a very confusing half hour.

Shoeless Joe Adrian

We're gonna have to rename this kid to Shoeless Joe Jackson.
Yesterday morning I put him in his exersaucer and it took him all of 7 minutes to get both socks off of his feet. I put them back on, and decided to pull out the camera. As you can see, he promptly removed both socks again.
